Most tree problems we get called out for in North Texas started the day the tree went in the ground. Wrong species for the soil, planted too deep, staked too long, or put somewhere it was never going to have room.
We plant with the root flare visible at grade, not buried, because a buried flare is the single most common cause of a young tree slowly declining for years. We choose species for Blackland Prairie clay and for the specific spot, considering mature size, overhead lines, foundation distance, and drainage. Staking comes off on schedule instead of girdling the trunk. It is a small job done carefully that saves a very large job later.
Live oak, cedar elm, bur oak, chinquapin oak, and Texas red oak all handle our clay and heat well. We steer people away from species that look great for five years and then struggle.
Fall through early spring. Planting into a North Texas summer means the tree spends its first months just trying to survive instead of establishing roots.
