Melissa has grown fast, and most of its residential canopy went in the ground at the same time, which creates a very specific set of tree problems.
Builder planted trees across Melissa tend to share the same issues, planted slightly too deep, left staked far too long, and never structurally pruned. The result is girdling roots and codominant stems with included bark, which is the classic setup for a young tree splitting in a straight line wind. Corrected in the first several years it costs very little. Left alone until the tree is mature, it becomes a removal.
Blackland Prairie clay runs through most of this region, and it behaves in a way that catches people out. It holds water tight through a wet spell and then cracks hard in a drought, and that swelling and shrinking works on a root plate year after year. It is a big part of why a tree here can look completely healthy from the street while its anchorage is already compromised. We inspect the whole tree, root flare included, before we recommend anything.
